TRUTH ABOUT BIG MUFFLERS/SILENCERS/EXHAUSTS

Royal Enfield guru Pete Snidal recently spotted something about the motorcycles.

"I notice one thing all the Bullets for sale seem to have in common - can you guess what it is?" he wrote.

Pete is the author of the acclaimed Royal Enfield Bullet owner's and workshop manual. He frequently chimes in on the Royal Enfield Yahoo message board to help troubleshoot problems owners experience.

But what could he possibly be seeing in the for-sale ads?

I guessed that maybe the Bullets listed for sale here tend to have low mileage. Obviously, some owners buy them and then sell them without riding very far. I was on the right track, but Snidal had something else in mind. He wrote:

"Look at all their exhaust systems. Something I discovered very early in life with Brit singles is that they became completely different machines with free-flowing (i.e., loud, requiring using your head about where and when to apply large gobs of throttle) exhaust systems. And that they were much less satisfactory when stock.

"An exception was the Velocettes with that monster Brooklands silencer, and the Goldstars, which already came with noisy mufflers. Some AJS/Matchless, too.

"My theory is that the owners who never 'bothered' with the first-stage mods, i.e., inlet and exhaust mods, just fell into the doldrums with their Bullets, and ended up putting them on the market. If you wonder, try putting your stock exhaust back on, and see for yourself.

"Instant Bow-Wow!"

Snidal was seeing the big, bazooka shaped factory muffler, which restricts performance, in the pictures of the bikes. Replacing it with a shorter and nosier silencer (and tuning appropriately) is an easy way to increase performance.

As Snidal observes, that makes for more owner satisfaction.

  6. Hi Royal Enfield....

My grandfather..My father...and me.. now.. are die hard fans of Royal Enfield :).

I am a thump lover...i am talking about the thump..not noise !!! We were planning to buy one since long....since say about 20 Yrs :P...Finally we got a Royal Enfiled- Electra-5s TwinSpark ( UCE ) done 4000 KM very recently. I think the Accelerator and Engine is totally different from the old one. It is like riding a Pulsar or any other Japs. :(

Please suggest me to improve the ridding pleasure...

some say its all about Silencer and some it is the Engine...!!

some say the new engine is not that great unlike the old ones... I am totally confused..

Ijust want to feel the pleasure of riding Royal Enfield and not the ordinary biking experience....

It should be like riding a Royal Enfield :)

what are the modification that i should make to get the free flow of thumpimg ?

I will be realllllllly great full to you ..if you can refer me suitable blogs or if you can answer me ....

    Thank you very Much ...

  14. i have 2008 RE Std 350 cc. i would like to go for short bottle but have some doubt. there is a short bottle silencer (free flow) available in local market. its totally empty from inside (free flow). is it ok to use this kind of short bottle. some people say this will damage the engine as it does'nt provide the back pressure because of free flow.
    please advice on this.

  23. We are authorized distributors for Goldstar silencers with conical baffles. These are the best alternative for the new royal enfields lacking the punch in their beats.
Why does this silencer makes it unique than the rest of the bunch? :
    1) Does not affect the mileage of your bike.
    2) Does not have a heavy back pressure that could ruin the engine in the long run.
    3) Has a mellow sound during idling & not a harsh one, but a moderate & effective punch during the ride that could give the 2nd looks.
    Please BEWARE OF IMITATIONS.
Please do not buy unscrupulous parts from unauthorized people just because you get it cheap.

  27. Hi,

I have Bullet Electra 350cc, 2012 model. I got its silencer changed to short bottle silencer(with jaali), but I am not happy with the thump.
I tried talking to owner of that showroom and he suggested that changing the silencer with punjabi dholki will affect the engine as it is clear through and hence carbon will accumulate on the engine

I confused with this. Could you please suggest me which silencer should I bought for better sound and thump without affecting the engine.

    Thanks
    Himanshu

  31. First of all, you will have to comprehend the fact that the new UCE engines are made in compliance with modern pollution laws; both air and sound.

So, however much you try, you won't get the THUMP of the ol' CI engines. Same is the case with the AVLs. Now, there are a couple of different silencers in the market. The most common are the Short bottle(Pune dholki), the punjab dholki(long bottle but free flow), and the goldstar (mostly imitations). I suggest the shortbottle. No rejetting needed REMEMBER.

After that, loosen the tappets a bit (would suggest to go the mech if you are not a pro or DIY guy), and block the PAV pipe with a ball bearing. . Start the bike, let her idle for a minute or so and ride off. . You will feel a marked difference.

    Thump Safe !

  32. I forgot to add, Royal Enfield doesn't make bullet anymore. They just make pulsars (or any random plastic bike) that looks like a bullet.
